As a child, Edward Doran's imagination propelled him into a fantasy world in which characters, images, and poetry were paramount. The son of immigrant parents from Glasgow, Scotland, Edward is a first generation Scottish-American born and raised in Los Angeles, California. By the time Edward finished high school, his passion for art had escalated and with guidance from his art teacher at Venice High School, Edward decided to pursue a career in commercial art. He enrolled in Los Angeles Trade Tech College, but soon became disheartened with the limited creativity afforded by the formality and structure of the classes and decided against a career as a commercial artist.
Discouraged and uncertain how to pursue an art career, Edward began a new job at a surgical center where he discovered his second passion-surgery. Starting in outpatient surgery, Edward absorbed everything he could learn about the operating room, and within five quick years, specialized in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Over the past ten years, Edward has become one of the most sought after specialized plastic and reconstructive surgical technicians assisting L.A.'s most elite plastic surgeons and appearing frequently on the hit show "Dr. 90210"
In 2002, after receiving a water color kit and canvas boards as a birthday gift, Edward returned to art for the first time in nearly a decade. Dissatisfied with the washed-out look of the water colors, Edward manipulated the paints to give them a thickness and brightness when applied to the canvas. His experiments with water colors inspired him to work with acrylics.
Inspired by Van Gogh, Monet, and Seurat and a fan of pointillism, Edward began depicting still life paintings and everyday scenes from his home in Los Angeles. But it was his career as a surgical technician that thrust Edward's artwork to the next level. Working to recreate bodies and the human form in his job lent a unique perspective to Edward's art; he now specializes in body portraiture-fine art depictions of the human form.
Combining his fascinations with human anatomy and the arts, Edward's journey now comes full circle. Today, his surgical knowledge and talent marries perfectly with his rekindled passion for acrylic on canvas. Edward's vibrant brush strokes and use of brilliant colors captures his passion for texture, emotion, and movement.
Mr. Doran's work has been featured in "W" magazine, and on the television show "Dr. 90210" on E! Entertainment Television.
Artist's Statement:
It is my hope to enlighten and inspire people through works of art and the human experience. Sensuality, love, tenacity, vision, experience are some of the many fragments of life that come together within the mind's imagination. The joining of these fragments with my admiration of the human form has translated into Bodies of Beverly Hills.
Working as a surgical technician in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, I have learned that the perfect body is a subjective concept. Each individual has his or her own idea of an ideal body. As a professional helping patients correct their perceived imperfections and seeing their satisfaction after a surgery, I have truly come to appreciate the human form in all of its incarnations. It is this appreciation that has allowed for a unique perspective in my artwork.
